| Og | | King of Bashan, east of the Sea of Galilee. He was defeated by the Israelites at Edrei, after the defeat of Sichon (Numbers 21:33-35). His kingdom was assigned to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and to half of the tribe of Menasseh (Numbers 32:33). Reputedly a giant, Og's huge black iron bedstead or sarcophagus could be seen in Rabbath-Ammon, the modern-day capital of Jordan (Deuteronomy 3:11). | |

| Onan | | Son of Judah and grandson of Jacob. His mother, Bath-shua, was a Canaanite. On the death of Onan's brother Er he was expected to marry Er's widow, Tamar, and have a son by her to continue the priestly line. Knowing that this child would not carry his name, Onan refused to fulfill his duty and avoided proper consummation of the marriage by the act of coitus interruptus (Genesis 38:8-10). God was angered by Onan's uncharitable behaviour and took his life. | |
