Dan
1.The fifth son of Jacob and the full brother of Naphtali by Leah's maidservant Bilhah. The popular etymology of his name evolved when Rachel, who was childless, exclaimed 'Danani' (God has judged me') (Genesis 30:5). He was involved with his brothers in the events leading to the selling of their brother Joseph into slavery in Egypt.Dan was sent by Jacob to buy corn in Egypt during the famine in Canaan. When Jacob settled in Egypt with his family, it included Dan's son. Jacob said 'Dan shall fight for (or judge) his people' (Genesis 49:16). 2. One of the twelve tribes of Israel descended from Dan. 3. A town in the far north of Canaan, called after the tribe that eventually settled there, but referred to anachronistically in Genesis 14:14 in connection with Abraham's pursuit of Chedorlaomer and his allies.
Dathan
He and Aviram took part in the rebellion of Korach against Moses. They were punished by being swallowed up by the earth (Numbers 16).
Deborah
Nurse to Rebecca. She remained with Rebecca after they left Mesopotamia and travelled to Canaan, where Rebecca married Isaac. Deborah died in Bethel near Jerusalem and was buried under an oak tree (Genesis 24:59; Genesis 35:8). The burial place was named Weeping Oak (Alon Bakhuth).
Dedan
1. Descendant of Abraham. Son of Yakshan, brother of Sheba.
2. Descendant of Noah. Son of Raamah, brother of Sheba
Diklah
Descendant of Noah. Son of Yoktan and brother of Almodad, Shelef, Chatzarmaveth, Yerach, Hadoram, Uzal, Oval, Avimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah and Yovav.
Dinah
Daughter of Jacob and Leah. She was seduced and raped by Shechem, the son of Chamor the Hivite. Hamor sought permission for his son to marry Dinah, and Dinah's brothers Simeon and Levi pretended to agree but insisted that the men of Shechem be circumcised. While they were recovering from the operation, Simeon and Levi killed all of the males and took Dinah away with them (Genesis 34).
Dishan
Son of Seir. Brother of Timna, Lotan, Shoval, Tziv'on, Anah, Dishon and Etzer.
Dishon
1. Son of Seir. Brother of Timna, Lotan, Shoval, Tziv'on, Anah, Etzer, and Dishan.
2. Son of Anah. Sister of Oholibama who married Esau.
Dodanim
Son of Yavan and great-grandson of Noah. The name of a Greek people, variously identified as the Dardanians or (by association with Rodanim) the Rhodians.
Duma
Son of Ishmael and grandson of Abraham (Genesis 13-15).
