Gacham
Son of Nachor and Reumah. Brother of Tevach, Tachash and Ma'akhah.
Gad
Seventh son of Jacob and eldest son of Zilpah, Leah's maid who had been given to Jacob as a concubine. He was involved in the events leading to the selling of his brother Joseph into slavery in Egypt, and was among the ten sons sent by Jacob to buy corn there. When Jacob went to Egypt to settle with his family, it included Gad's seven sons.Before Jacob died he blessed Gad and said, 'Raiders shall raid Gad, but he will raid at their heel' (Genesis 49:19).Ancestor of the tribe of that name.
Gaddi
One of the twelve spies sent out by Moses to survey the land of Canaan. Gaddi represented the tribe of Menasseh (Numbers 13:11).
Gadiel
One of the twelve spies sent out by Moses to survey the land of Canaan. Gadiel represented the tribe of Zebulun (Numbers 13:10).
Gamliel
Leader of the tribe of Menasseh in the wilderness. Son of Padah-tzur, he was one of the twelve princes representing each tribe who had directed the census (Numbers 1:10). His offerings to the Tabernacle are listed at Numbers 7:54-9.
Gatam
Grandson of Esau and son of Eliphaz. Brother of Teman, Omar, Tzefo, Kenaz and Korach.
Gera
Grandson of Jacob and son of Benjamin. Brother of Bela, Bekher, Ashbel, Naaman, Echi, Rosh, Muppim, Chuppim and Ard.
Gershom
Eldest son of Moses and Tzipporah, born in Midian. Moses chose his name, saying 'I have been a foreigner (Ger) in a strange land' (Exodus 2:22). Tzipporah circumcised Gershom with a sharp stone to prevent Moses from being killed by God. His descendants became priests to the tribe of Dan.
Gershon, Gershom
The eldest of the three sons of Levi. During the Exodus, his descendants, who were Levites, carried the Tabernacle and were in charge of its coverings and hangings (Genesis 46:11; Exodus 6:16,17; Numbers 3:21-6; Numbers 4:22-6; Numbers 7:7; Numbers 10:17; Numbers 26:57).
Gether
Grandson of Shem and son of Aram. Brother of Utz, Chul and Mash.
Geu'el
One of the twelve spies sent out by Moses to survey the land of Canaan. Geu'el represented the tribe of Gad (Numbers 13:15).
Gilead
1. Son of Makhir and grandson of Menasseh. Father of Iyezer, Chelek, Asriel, Shekhem, Shemids and Chefer. Progenitor of the Gileadite clan, part of the tribe of Menasseh (Genesis 31:21).
2. Gilead is an area to the east of the Jordan river, north of Cheshbon and the Jabbok. It is mentioned in the story of Laban at Genesis 31:25. It was captured by Makhir, who expelled the Amorite population living there (Numbers 32:39-40).
Girgashites
The Girgashites were among the several ethnic groups that inhabited Canaan before the formation of the Israelite federation (Genesis 10:15-17; Genesis 15:19-21). Said to have been descended from Ham, they were among the peoples displaced by the Israelite conquest, possibly settling in Africa.
Gomer
Eldest son of Yepheth and a grandson of Noah. Sometimes identified with Germany by rabbinic sources: modern scholarship usually identifies them with the Cimmerians in Herodotus, whose precise identity remains a matter of dispute.
Goyim
Tidal, king of Goyim, is mentioned as one of the allies of Chedorlaomer (Genesis 14:1). It is not certain whether Goyim is a proper name or simply means 'nations'.
Guni
Grandson of Jacob and son of Naphtali. Brother of Yachtze'el, Yetzer and Shilem.
