Commentary:
tar pits Even now, asphalt is found in the Dead Sea region. The Romans referred to it as Mer Asphaltitis, the Asphalt Sea, and it was known to cast up lumps of asphalt (Josephus, Wars 4:8:4; Tacitus, Histories 5:6).
| mountains That is, to the mountains on the west of the Dead Sea, toward Hebron, where Abram was living.
