Ki Tisa

33:3 '[You will thus go to] a land flowing with milk and honey. However, I will not go with you, since you are an unbending people, and I may destroy you along the way.'
El-erets zavat chalav udvash ki lo e'eleh bekirbecha ki am-ksheh-oref atah pen-achelcha badarech.
33:4 When they heard this bad news, the people began to mourn. They stopped wearing jewelry.
Vayishma ha'am et-hadavar hara hazeh vayit'abalu velo-shatu ish edyo alav.

  Literally, 'stiff-necked.'

stopped wearing jewelry
See Exodus 32:2. Some say that the 'jewelry' here denotes the spiritual gifts that the Israelites received at Sinai (Shabbath 88a; Targum Yonathan; Rashi).
